Weblicon Joins the Wireless Village Initiative
Berlin-based Weblicon Technologies AG said it has joined the Wireless Village initiative that aims to define and promote a set of universal specifications for mobile instant messaging and presence services.
With its action, Weblicon said it has placed mobility and instant messaging in the heart of its strategy with the goal to bring real-time messaging and presence information to mobile devices. It will integrate the services into its Online Organizer, officials said.
Weblicon said it provides mobile operators, ISPs and hardware vendors with Personal Information Management (PIM) services. The Weblicon Organizer is a revenue-driving, customer-binding service adding significant value to the product portfolio of mobile operators driving the transition from voice to data services.
Integrating IMPS with its Online Organizer will allow users of the Weblicon Organizer to exchange Instant Messages with upcoming mobile phones from industry leading manufacturers. IMPS enables sending of short text messages and even picture, voice and video communication. Using an IMPS mobile phone equipped with a camera, users will be able to take a photo of a scenic route and instantly send the picture to a friend or co-worker in the office. They will be able to indicate a mood by switching to "busy" while in a meeting or "available" during leisure time, Weblicon added.
The Wireless Village initiative is spearheaded by Ericsson, Motorola and Nokia. The group was formed in April 2001 to define and promote a set of universal specifications for mobile instant messaging and presence services. The specifications will be used for exchanging messages and presence information between mobile devices, mobile services and Internet-based instant messaging services, all fully interoperable and leveraging existing Web technologies.
Wireless Services Goes SMPP
Bellevue, Wash.-based Wireless Services Corp. (WSC) , which provides value-added wireless data delivery solutions and is a national provider of standards-based intercarrier data messaging interoperability, said it is supporting the Short Message Peer to Peer (SMPP) architecture requirements resulting from the recent SMS Forum meeting.
WSC's IDX (Intercarrier Data Exchange) software platform, which has been commercially deployed in major wireless carriers for over five years, exceeds the features recently defined by the SMS Forum and CTIA, company officials said.
WSC's IDX platform offers basic and value-added capabilities, like:
* Message confirmation on "sent" and "read"
* User defined "my replies"
* Intelligent message routing (based on receiving device capabilities)
* Extended message length (1000 characters)
* Message detail for real-time billing
* Technology aware platform (GSM, iDEN, TDMA, CDMA, etc.)
