Sun shines on small businesses with new server
IT specialist Sun is attempting to tap into the small business market with the Small Office Solution, a low-cost Linux server with productivity tools, messaging and remote access.
Sun claims the system will be perfect for small businesses and that it will be an alternative to the much higher priced products from Microsoft and Novell.
The Small Office Solution consists of an entry level server, a dual 1.4GHz Intel processor-based box, and will have several third party applications running on top of Suns own Linux distribution.
The software has also been designed to integrate with clients such as Microsofts Outlook so that customers can stick with client-end software they already know.
The Small Office Solution, includes Suns won StarOffice productivity suite, Weblicons Calmeno server software for messaging and information management, Tarantellas software for web-based access to applications and MySQL for handling databases.
The box has also been design to be configured and maintained by companies that do not necessarily have any IT staff, using a web-based interface, through which an administrator can set up features such as internal email accounts, calendars and address books.
Steve Raby, Suns director of partner sales in the UK, said the company was getting demand from customers to provide an alternative to Microsoft and Netware.
They want to see what else is out there to run their business on now weve got the products to be able to offer them something, he said.
The system will cost around £6,120 with a license for up to 50 users - for more information go to www.sun.com .
