Small and medium companies searching for alternatives to Microsoft
Microsoft-Free Office with Linux, StarOffice and Calmeno
Berlin, October 4, 2002: Weblicon and Sun are offering small and medium businesses liberation from the dependence on Microsoft Office and Exchange products. At the German computer fare Systems (hall B3 booth 340), Weblicon Technologies AG together with Sun Microsystems present a new office solution based on StarOffice software and the Calmeno Organizer. The new solution runs on the proven Linux operating system and uses open standards. It is lower in price, easier to use and safer than Microsoft Office, Exchange and Outlook. For the first time, smaller companies can use the advanced mobile office functions of Calmeno providing mobile access to company-wide e-mail, calen-dar, tasks and the company address book.
The products StarOffice (word processing, spreadsheet, presentation) and Calmeno (e-mail, SMS, calendar, address book, tasks) are complementary to each other. Thanks to the use of open standards, the two products can be smoothly integrated into a single solution. For example, the user may enter contact data to the Calmeno address book and, through a joint LDAP interface, can use them directly in StarOffice word processing.
More and more companies are fed up with the growing complexity of Microsoft products. The situation is being aggravated by Microsofts new licensing policy, prompting many businesses to watch out for alternatives. A genuine alternative to the core products of Microsoft is now offered by an alliance between Weblicon and Sun in conjunction with the successful Linux operating system, said Carsten Brinkschulte, CEO of Weblicon Technologies AG.
While StarOffice replaces the Microsoft products Word, Excel and PowerPoint, Calmeno provides a full-scale alternative to Microsofts Exchange and Outlook. Convenient transition from Microsoft products is guaranteed by Weblicon and Sun: Microsoft Word and Excel documents can be easily opened in StarOffice, while Calmeno provides synchronization with Microsoft Outlook. The Outlook calendar and address book can be made available in the Calmeno server with only a few clicks.
Users of the Calmeno Organizer can access their e-mails, calendar, address book and tasks from any PC or Macintosh in any part of the world. The synchronization function of Calmeno enables data exchange with Palm and PocketPC PDAs and even wireless synchronization with SyncML-capable cellphones, such as Ericsson T68i or Nokia 7650. A simple WAP-enabled cellphone can be used on the road providing live mobile access to e-mails, calendars and the company address book.
The Calmeno server runs on Linux or Solaris servers within the company network and is immune to viruses and attacks from the Internet targeted at Microsoft products. Access via the Internet is protected by a safe SSL connection, providing secure encrypted communication.
